lacking inspiration

My father in law is turning 70 this week. I know his interests, I know the colours he likes, I have suitable stamps, dies and paper kits, but I have two blank cards (making one from my mum to him, too).

Usually I love making cards, I think of it as a form of therapy for myself, it helps me relax and focus on thge here and now. I’ve been making other cards this week, a couple of wedding ones are drying as I type. But those two cards still remain blank.

Men are harder for me, but I generally enjoy the challenge, and ewhen I get stuck turn to Pinterest for inspiration. I’ve looked, but those two cards still remain blank.
I think I might be trying too hard. You’re only 70 once, they’re memory box cards, seen by lots of people. I’m a crafter, my mother in law tells people, so my creations may be noticed. What if they’re not good enough? Or if he doesn’t like them? Those two cards still remain blank.

My logical brain is reminding me that I’ve made hundreds of cards in the past and they’re perfectly adequate, that any card is better than none, that he’s likely to not actually pay that much attention to each individual card when he’s getting a lot…  But those two cards still remain blank.

I’m stuck. Bath then bed, try again in the morning. For now, those two cards still remain blank

I think every crafter knows these blank periods well. If it’s any help, when I get like this, I go to bed and think off the happy and fun times of the person I’m trying to create for, in my thoughts zooming in on the style of clothes, the colour, the expressions, etc, and most of the time, I wake up inspired by something really small that has made me smile, and from that blossoms a card. Whatever you do, it will be unique and truly loved by your family, and they will think it is amazing, because you made it, to them, that is what counts. Good luck 🙂

Ooooh a mortal sin to buy a card! I wear dark glasses and a rain mack to go get anything from card factory lol. I think you should forgive yourself, have a lovely relaxing sleep and something somewhere will suddenly click, but I always find that when I really really pushed with men’s cards, stars or flags always manage to make a great male card.

I seem to struggle with the “important” ones, too. (and I have to make one for my father-in-law in the next week!) Take a deep breath. Do you have number stamps and/or dies that you could use for the 70? Or a special photograph that maybe you could incorporate into the design?

    You can do it!

Oh yes I can relate to being stuck and I think your bath and bed was a smart idea. Sometimes when I am stuck I lay in bed thinking about what I want the piece to accomplish and sometimes it comes to me as I am drifting off to sleep!

Oh no, don’t think like that. I worry too about if what I make is ‘good enough’ but I’m sure most people who don’t craft just think everything you make is lovely and other crafters will admire it and ask how you did It! 😊 Hope inspiration strikes soon-maybe when you’re least expecting It!

Hope you found your inspiration this morning. I find that when I am struggling to design a card I’ll go for something a bit different with the shape – like a box card or collar fold card – so that the shape wows them before they look at the dies I’ve used or the design itself. I like the idea of a pop up box card for a 70th as you could add shapes for all of his interests as well as the 7 and 0. Good Luck (please share what you end up making).

Oh I, too struggle with masculine cards….and July is filled with them! I have 8 birthdays from June 29 to July 31 and 4 of them are masculine! Ugh! You will come up with something great I am sure! Sometimes I just go on to something else and that’s when the “vision” pops in my head. 🙂
